The Borton Cup is for the winner of the North Otago Senior competition. It was named after John Borton, who a successful and prominent farmer in the North Otago region during the mid to late 1800's. He is also belived to have taken part in the first North Otago Rep match against South Canterbury in 1896. The Borton Cup which is presented each year is a replacement as according to engraving on the current Borton Cup, it was presented by Waitaki Boys High School rector Frank Milner as the original was 'destroyed by fire WBHS 1920', as such records of competition winners prior to 1920 are mostly unknown. The Borton Cup is keenly contested by the local sides and is the oldest trophy presented at the end of year prize-giving.
After an undefeated season, The Tureka Cricket Club were the inaugural winners of the North Otago Cricket Association Senior Competition in 1899-1900. |
