Introduced at the start of the 2007-08 season. Initial holder is Union as cup is named after Russell Payne and Ted Tempero who are both life members of the Union Cricket Club and the North Otago Cricket Association. Ted Tempero is also a life member of the Otago Cricket Association. Both have been extensively involved in the administration of cricket at club and association level for long periods of time. During the winter of 2007 Ted Tempero resigned from cricket administration after 41 years. Russell Payne is still providing an outstanding wicket at Whitestone Stadium as he has for a number of years.
The cup is defended in a similar format to rugby's Ranfurly Shield with the holder defending the trophy from challengers in all games played at the home ground of the defender.(Oct 2007) |
