A magnificent 143 from wicketkeeper batsman Scott Simpson carried Oamaru to a 125 run win over Albion in Dick Hunt trophy cricket on Saturday. Union continued on its winning way with a 28 run win over Valley at Weston.

Oamaru won the toss and elected to bat on the all weather pitch at St Kevin's College. Although Oamaru lost opener Josh Gutsell for six Simpson and Alex Baddock put Oamaru back on  track and after 21 overs Oamaru was 109 for four. Oamaru added 31 runs from the

Butler Scores 115 as North Otago take first innings honors

North Otago beat Southland on the first innings in a Hawke Cup elimination match played at Queens Park over the weekend. Southland won the toss on Saturday and elected to bat, albeit in rather pedestrian fashion, to be 90 for four at lunch. Southland accelerated in the second session to be 227 for four at tea before slumping to be all out for 281 midway through the final session of the first day.

Valley, Union have easy wins in Dick Hunt Action

Union and Valley scored wins in the dick Hunt trophy competition played over the holiday period. Valley beat Albion by eight wickets at Weston while Union downed Oamaru by seven wickets.

Albion won the toss and decided to bat first against Valley but the side could face only 19 of its 45 overs before it was dismissed for a meager 59.The Valley bowlers had a field day. Simon Robins continued his fine form taking three for five off four overs while Hamish McKenzie took three for 14 off his five overs and Scott Young chipped in with two for 19).

Union stayed at the top of the Borton Cup competition with a 98 run win over Valley at Weston on Saturday as the first half of the competition concluded.Waitaki Boys avenged its early season defeat by St Kevin's College with a one wicket win at the College top ground while Oamaru moved into second place with a five wicket win over Albion.

A 120 run opening stand between James Cutt(45) and Duncan Drew(72) laid the foundation for North Otago''s win over South Canterbury in a 50 over game played in Timaru yesterday. Glen Paterson added a solid 47 while Ben Miller was the pick of the South Canterbury bowlers taking four for 35.

Union Remain Undefeated

By Terry O'Neil of the Otago Daily Times Union maintained its Borton Cup lead and retained the Payne/Tempero trophy when it beat Oamaru at King George Park on Saturday by five wickets. St Kevin's Collerge moved into second place with a 23 run win over Albion in a game that produced 535 runs while Waitaki Boys High School registered its first win of the season with a seven wicket win over Valley.

Union Led Borton Cup

Union remains the only unbeaten side in Borton Cup cricket after the playing of the third round on Saturday. Union beat St Kevin's College the only other unbeaten team going into the round by five wickets. Albion beat Waitaki Boys High School by four wickets at Milner Park while Oamaru beat Valley by 143 runs.

Union won the toss and put St Kevin's in to bat and St Kevin's openers Simon Butler(36) and Ben Cant(30) featured in an opening stand of 63.

Batting bolstered in Hawke Cup squad

Batting has been the North Otago cricket team’s downfall over the last few seasons, but this year it could well be their strongest component.

The North Otago Hawke Cup squard was announced on Friday and the team appears to be stacked for top order batting talent.
