Union stayed at the top of the Borton Cup competition with a 98 run win over Valley at Weston on Saturday as the first half of the competition concluded. Waitaki Boys avenged its early season defeat by St Kevin's College with a one wicket win at the College top ground while Oamaru moved into second place with a five wicket win over Albion.

Union won the toss and decided to bat first against Valley. Openers James Cutt(65) and Duncan Drew(65) featured in an opening stand of 149 just 21 runs away from the club record held by Drew and Paul Beare. Valley's Simon Robins made inroads into the Union middle order at one stage sitting on a hat trick. Further down the order Todd Sidon added 25 valuable runs as Union went through to 241 for nine in its 45 over's. Robins and Hamish McKenzie took three wickets each with Andrew Fisher claiming two for 31 off his five over's.

Valley lost three early wickets to be 43 for three after nine over's. It then slumped to 88 for five but John Blakely (24) and Geoff Mansfield(21) carried Valley through to 143 before the tenth wicket fell in the 32nd over. Paul Johnston and Glynn Cameron took three wickets each for Union with Dan Conlan picking up two for 34 off six over's.

Albion won the toss and elected to bat first against Oamaru but was dismissed for a paltry 97. Darren Shillito(25) and Dylan Winter (21) were the only batsmen to show any substance. David Sewell took four for 27 and Mark Creighton three for 38.

Oamaru cruised through to 98 for five with opener Josh Gutsell leading the way with an unbeaten 41.

Waitaki Boys won the toss and put St Kevin's in to bat. The dismissal of Simon Butler for 29 saw the St Kevin's batting line-up crumble before the Waitaki attack of Chris Ware(four for 50) and Jordan Horrell(two for 25) with the College side 117 for eight after 28 overs. A lusty 42 from Alex Baddock backed up by 24 from Peter O'Malley enable St Kevin's to struggle through to 166 before losing the final wicket in the 37th over. Sean Todd took two for 24 and at one stage was sitting on a hat trick.

Waitaki started slowly to be 53 for three after 16 over's but Horrell and Ware(53 not out) took Waitaki to 101 for four after 26 overs. Ware played the anchor role as Waitaki made 167 for nine with Butler taking five for 22 and Brent O'Connor two for 24.
