Central Otago beat North Otago by 39 runs on the first innings and became the first holder of the "Tate Tiger" trophy in a two-day representative cricket match played here at the weekend.

Central Otago made 228 for nine on the first day and North Otago was well on the way to overhauling this total, but a middle order collapse saw the local side crumble.

North Otago was 125 for one following a good second wicket partnership between R. Payne 35 and I. Geddes 69. B. Papps was out for 13 and the side was one down for 125.

But, Central Otago captain, S. McKnight, took six wickets for only 35 runs and the local side folded for 189.

Central Otago won the toss and batted first after an hours delay due to rain.

Captain, McKnight, made a solid 49, but the side was struggling at four for 89. Then S. McSkimming and J. Restall joined for a fine partnership which produced 78 runs. McSkimming later produced some fine stroke making which brought his total to 72.

North Otago's N. McKenzie mopped up the tail enders taking four for 38.

Central Otago declared at nine for 228 leaving North Otago 15 minutes batting time. Three runs were scored without loss before stumps.

North Otago was all out for 189, but in the second strike at the wicket, Central Otago chased the runs to declare at 132 for five (C. Buttar 45, L. McSkimming 30, O. Buttar 21).

North Otago was left 70 minutes to compile 172. The side hit out, but could only muster 55 for five when the match was called off in failing light. Golden notched up 23.
