Monday, 2 April 2012

Cricket was still being played in North Otago on Saturday, Union winning the Borton Cup by four wickets over Albion.

Union won the toss and asked Albion to bat first. Union had immediate success when Chris Ware had Albion opener Steve Halliwell caught off his gloves with his first delivery.

Worse was to follow. Eight balls later the other opener, Hayden McKenzie, went with Albion slumping to two for one. The third and fourth wickets fell at 27 and the fifth and the sixth at 32 before some resistance led by Scott Guyton (19 not out) saw Albion through to 91.

Glynn Cameron took three for 18, Ware two for 15 and Isaac Shield and Brad Fleming took two wickets each.

Albion struck early in Union's chase with opener Antony Cromwell dismissed by Brad Kernahan with the second ball of the innings.

However, Jeremiah Shields (28) and Duncan Drew (39) put the side back into a winning position although Union lost six wickets in the process.

Ricky Whyte took three for 28 and Kernahan two for 34 off his six overs.

In lower grade action Union's senior reserve team beat Valley in an exciting final by one wicket on the last ball while Valley won the second grade final against Union by 13 runs.
