Central Otago beat North Otago by 10 wickets in a Hawke Cup elimination cricket match at Balclutha over the weekend.

L. Anderson, the Central Otago pace bowler, wrecked North Otago's first innings when he took two wickets in the first and over went on to finish with seven for 15 from 20 overs. Anderson was well supported by A. McCutcheon and North Otago scored only 53 runs from 39 overs.

Anderson also top scored with 30 when Central replied, but several others made useful scores and Central led by 113 in the first innings. The best of the North Otago bowlers was A. Cartwright, a medium-pacer, who took five for 21 from 18 overs.

In the second innings North Otago collapsed against the off-spin of T. Petheric and S. McKnight. A stubborn 74 by opener R. Payne, who shared a seventh-wicket stand of 65 with Cartwright, took the visitors to 152. Petheric and McKnight obtained some sharp turn and each took five wickets.

Central needed 40 from 13 overs to win and scored them with seven balls to spare.
