Union maintained its ten point lead in Borton Cup cricket with a 97 run win over Albion at King George Park on Saturday. Valley moved into second place equal with Waitaki Boys High School with an 82 run win over Oamaru while Waitaki Boys High School beat St Kevin's College by 27 runs at Milner Park.
Sent in to bat by Albion Union found runs hard to come by but the middle order bolstered by a fine innings by Duncan Drew saw Union finally dismissed for 191 in the 48th over. Drew was finally out for 80 while the only other batsman to fire was Paul Johnston(20). Brad Kernahan and Tom Dwyer took three wickets each for Albion while Tom Hornweg and Ricky Whyte claimed a couple each.
Albion made a disastrous start losing two wickets in the sixth over and only Gareth Duncan(21) showed any determination with the bat. Phil Crossan and Brad Fleming took three wickets each while Issac Shields who at one stage had taken two for two finished with two for 15.
Oamaru won the toss and asked Valley to bat first at the Excelsior ground with Cameron Leckie and Hayden Tisdall putting on 45 runs in the first ten overs. Tisdall went on to make 29 before he was dismissed. Reuben Simpson added 20 and in a final flourish Tom Squire was unbeaten on 31 before Valley was dismissed for 187 in the 41st over. Jason McLaren took four for 26 and Josh Gutsell two for 33.
Oamaru after two overs was four for the loss of two wickets and slumped to 41 for four with Simpson taking three for 11 off his first six overs. Josh Gutsell (36) and James Mallinson(20) slowed the decline before the final wicket fell at 105 in the 32nd over. Simpson finished with three for 33 while Geoff Mavor off 14 balls took three for one.
The St Kevin’s batsmen could not back up the bowlers after winning the toss and asking Waitaki Boys to bat first. The St Kevin’s bowling attack spearheaded by Ed Smith and Jeremy Smith had Waitaki Boys 47 for five after 16 overs with Waitaki Boys player/coach Stephan Grobler going cheaply. Matt Munro(32) and Gordon Upton(20) saw Waitaki Boys through to 119 before the final wicket fell in the 38th over. Ed Smith took four for 21 and Jeremy Smith,four for 26.
St Kevin’s never fired with the bat tied down by the tight bowling of Grobler and Sam Wicks. At one stage Grobler had bowled seven overs, three of which were maidens to have taken three for six while Wicks at the other end had bowled seven overs for a mere eight runs. St Kevin’s was finally dismissed for 92 in the 20th over with Grobler taking five for eight off nine overs and Wicks,two for 20 while Munro took two for 20 as well.
