Union maintained its Borton Cup lead and retained the Payne/Tempero trophy when it beat Oamaru at King George Park on Saturday by five wickets. St Kevin's College moved into second place with a 23 run win over Albion in a game that produced 535 runs while Waitaki Boys High School registered its first win of the season with a seven wicket win over Valley.

Oamaru won the toss and decided to bat first against Union. Oamaru started brightly and after nine overs as 48 for two with opener Josh Gutsell out for 23.Oamaru after 23 of the 45 overs was 137 for four and it was only a fine innings from Jamie Ferris(79) that carried Oamaru through to a respectable 191 before the final wicket fell in the 34th over. Ben Coleman gave Ferris valuable support with 27 while bowling for Union Dan Conlan took four for 33 and Glynn Cameron, four for 34 off his seven overs. Union lost Thomas Shields and James Cutt early in the innings to be 34 for two after 11 overs. Glynn Cameron went cheaply but Duncan Drew( 72) and Mark Wilson(48) featured in a fourth wicket stand of 90 to put Union in a commanding position to go through to 195 for five in the 42nd over. David Sewell took two for 29 off his ten overs for Oamaru.

Valley decided to bat first against Waitaki Boys but apart from a fine 51 from Byron Neil the Valley batsmen failed to produce and the side was dismissed for 116 in the 28th over. Sean Todd claimed five for 47 and Chris Ware, two for 16.

Waitaki started disastrously losing Jordan Horrell and Andrew McCulloch in the first two over to be six for two. With Scott young taking both wickets for Valley. Waitaki however lost only one further wicket, that of Ware(36) before Kieran Paterson(34 not out) and Stu Dickinson(30 not out) saw Waitaki through to 119 for three in the 18th over. Paterson with some lusty hitting took 22 runs off the last four balls of the match. Three sixes and a four. Young finished with two for 31.

English player/coach Simon Butler laid the foundation for St Kevin's win over Albion with a magnificent 155 opening the innings for the College side. With fellow opener Ben Cant (45), Butler put on 130 for the first wicket. Sean Conlan(30) and Tim O'Malley(26) added valuable runs before the St Kevin's innings closed at 279 for six. Brad Kernahan took three for 64 and Dylan Winter, two for 74 for Albion.

Albion lost opener Jon Sinclair and Darren Shillito early but Peter Cartwright(74) and Brad Kernahan(27) saw the side through to 143 for three adding 48 runs for the third wicket. The Albion lower order , Scott Guyton(20), Steve Halliwell(24) and Gareth Duncan(28) added valuable runs but needing 40 runs off the last five overs and having two wickets in hand proved beyond Albion which was dismissed for 256. Peter O'Malley, Brent O'Connor, Alex Baddock and Butler took two wickets each for St Kevin's.

In second grade cricket Valley's Barry Matthews showed that rugby is not his only skill hitting an unbeaten 115 against Albion White on Saturday.
