U15s celebrate a wicket
Tuesday, 21 January 2014

Oamaru and Union scored clear-cut wins in Dick Hunt trophy cricket on Saturday. Eastern put Oamaru in to bat at Excelsior ground but after losing early wickets Stephan Grobler(63) gave the side momentum and backed up by Francois Mostert(48) and Roly Senior(7) Oamaru gave Eastern a formidable target of 224 before the final wicket fell. Matt McLelland was the best of the Eastern bowlers taking four for 24 and Roger Buckingham, two for 57. Too many Eastern bowler were wayward with the side donating a prolific number of wide's to the Oamaru total. Only McLelland(20) showed any real opposition to the Oamaru attack spearheaded by Mostert whose aggressive bowling gave him four for 12 while Mark Julius claimed three for 51 and Grobler's leg spin gave him two for 18 as Eastern was dismissed for 121.

A big innings of 84 from Sean Conlan guided Union to 171 for eight chasing Valley's 168. Valley's Hamish McKenzie(50) and Byron Neil(25) were the only batsmen of any substance as Union's Paul Johnston took five for 41 and Craig Robertson, two for 20. Duncan Drew(25) was the pick of the Union top order and at 103 for five looked fragile but Sean Conlan(84) took to the Valley attack guiding Union to 171 for eight. Reuben Simpson, Hayden Tisdall and Mark Broughton took two wickets each for Valley.

In an exciting last round for the Dick Hunt, Union has already qualified for the final in a fornight while Oamaru and Albion will play each other to find out who will play them in two weeks time.

Eastern club’s Jeff Grubb expressed disappointment with the number of times that the Eastern senior reserve side had been defaulted to. "It appears that some of the Oamaru based clubs, including schools, are unwilling to travel south to Waikouaiti or Palmerston to play. So far this season our  senior reserve side has been defaulted to on at least three occasions. It’s just not good enough."
