Valley retained the Payne/Tempero trophy when it defeated Oamaru/St Kevins College XI by 11 runs at Weston Park on Saturday. Union battled through to beat Eastern by two wickets with three balls remaining while Albion accounted for Waitaki Boy's High School by five wickets.

Union put Eastern in to bat at Waikouaiti but some detirmed batting from James Dempster (30), Matt McLelland (26) and Cameron Grubb was backed up by some big hitting from Michael Dodd (40) to carry Eastern through to 178 before the final wicket fell in the 48th over. Bowling for Union, Duncan Drew, Brad Fleming and Dan Conlan took two wickets each. Drew held the Union innings together with a well complied 64 while Thomas Shields added 27, enabling Union to pass the Eastern total with two wickets in hand and just three balls remaining. Bowling for Eastern, Cameron Grubb off nine overs took four for 35 and Andrew Grubb off nine overs took three for 27 off 8.3 overs.

Accurate bowling from the Combined XI's attack saw Valley restricted to 101 when batting first in 27 overs. Brayden Lindsay took three for 15 and Regan George three for 12 while Matt Murphy took two for 33. The Combined XI could not handle the bowling of Francois Mostert, who from his 10 overs took seven for 13 including one wicket which saw two of the stumps shattered. Nick Clelland chimed in with two for 18 as the Combined XI was dismissed for 90 runs in the 19th over. Brady Kingan (24) and Jordan Bartlett (26) were the best of the Combined XI batsmen.

Waitaki Boys High School could not build on some fine batting from Jake Greenslade (33) and Cam McRae (32) and the side was dismissed by Albion for 108 in the 25th over. Bowling for Albion, Jeremy Smith and Mar Nizar took three wickets each and Ricky Whyte picked up two for 15 of three overs. Some big hitting from Gary Mahuika (66 not out), who completed an unbeaten 53-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Matt Day, saw Albion safely through to 110 for five in 24 overs. Bowling for Waitaki Boy's, Blake James took two for 32.
