Valley, Albion and Waitaki Boys High School had wins in the first round of Borton Cup cricket played in Oamaru on Saturday in trying conditions.
Valley batting first against Union at King George Park was dismissed for 155 in the 45th over with Neil Gilbert(36 not out) and Sean Todd(58) plundering the Union attack with an 82 runs stand for the ninth wicket.Bowling for Union Glynn Cameron took five for 24 off his ten overs. Accurate bowling from Craig Direen who took four for 29 and Todd, two for 33 saw Union dismissed for 132 in the 35th over. Thomas Shield made 27, and Duncan Drew 21, to be the best of the Union batsmen. For Union is was the first home loss in three years.
Albion defeated Oamaru/St Kevin’s College by five wickets at the Centennial Park outer oval. The combined side was dismissed for 143 in the 37th over with Brady Kingan (41 not out) and James Mallinson(40) the best of the batsmen. Bowling for Albion Sam Wicks took three for 30 with Ricky Whyte producing identical figures while Kernahan chimed in with two for 10.Amir Nazir(56) and Kernahan(39) saw Albion through to 147 for five in the thirty third over with Kingan claiming two for 31 .
Waitaki Boys High School had an eight wicket win over Eastern at Milner Park. Batting first Eastern was dismissed for 65 with Blake Jones taking five for 24 and James got excellent support from Dallas Mahuika who finished with four for 22.Waitaki Boys cruised through to 66 for two in the 16th over with Stephan Grobler unbeaten on 33.
