Valley handed out a ten wicket drubbing to Union at King George Park on Saturday to retain ts five point lead in Borton Cup over Albion which defeated Oamaru/St Kevin’s College by seven wickets while Waitaki Boys High School moved into third place with a 34 run win over Eastern in Palmerston.

Valley won the toss and put Union in to bat. Union batted through its fifty overs to be 191 for nine with Duncan Drew (45), Dan Conlan(36 not out) and Sean Conlan(21) the best of the batsmen. Bowling for Valley player/coach Francois Mostert  was miserly taking two for 13 off his ten overs  while Blair Malcolm, Nick Cleland and Robbie Smith took two wickets each.

It was one way traffic in the Valley innings with openers Mostert(98 not out)  and  Lachie Kingan(52 not out) cruising through to 192 without loss assisted by 42 extras from Union bowlers who conceded 31 wides.

Oamaru/St Kevin’s College won the toss against Albion but the innings never gained any momentum slumping to 54 for five in the seventeenth over. Matt Murphy(26) and Sammy Havea(28) fought back further down the order before the side was dismissed for 124 in the thirty eighth over.  Ian Cooney took three for ten while Matt Day, Ricky Whyte and Amir Mirza took two wickets each.

Opener Ian Cooney although not a stylist with the bat was effective as boundaries flowed as he hit a quickfire 37 backed up by Mirza(46) as Albion raced through to 125 for three against an ordinary Oamaru/St Kevin’s attack.

Waitaki Boys High School moved into third place with a 4 run win over Eastern. Waitaki Boys won the toss and batting first made 149 before the tenth wicket fell in the thirty fifth over mainly due to a fine 62 from Dallas Mahuika. Cameron Grubb was the most successful Eastern bowler taking four for32 while Ollie McLelland  and Matt McLelland took two wickets each. Matt McLelland played the anchor role in the Eastern innings being unbeaten on 57 when the final wicket fell in the twenty sixth over with the total at 115.The best of the Waitaki Boys bowlers was Josh Hayward with four for 16  backed up by Blake James, three for 35 and Nathan Smith, two for 15.

In second grade cricket Albion  beat Oamaru by nine wickets with Albion’s Dale Fraser taking three for seven including a hat trick.
