A magnificent 143 from wicketkeeper batsman Scott Simpson carried Oamaru to a 125 run win over Albion in Dick Hunt trophy cricket on Saturday. Union continued on its winning way with a 28 run win over Valley at Weston.
Oamaru won the toss and elected to bat on the all weather pitch at St Kevin's College. Although Oamaru lost opener Josh Gutsell for six Simpson and Alex Baddock put Oamaru back on track and after 21 overs Oamaru was 109 for four. Oamaru added 31 runs from the next seven overs as Simpson went through to 79.With six of the 45 overs remaining Oamaru cut loose adding 84 runs with Simpson finally dismissed for 143 hitting five sixes and 15 fours while Khalil was unbeaten on 50 at the end of the innings. Paul O'Dell took three for 25 while Dan Fletcher and Simon Butler took two wickets each.
Butler and Darren Shillito gave Albion a reasonable start at 20 without loss after six overs but the next nine overs saw Albion lose five wickets for the addition of only 37 runs. O'Dell (22) saw Albion through to 101 for seven and the last three wickets carried Albion through to 148 before the final wicket fell in the 44th over. Alex Baddock took four for 34 and Nick Johnston three for 37.
Duncan Drew continued his fine form with the bat and ball as Union after winning the toss and batting first made 201 for seven in its 45 overs. Drew produced a fine 59 and further down the order Jeremiah Shields added 43.Geoff Mavor and Hamish McKenzie took two wickets each for Valley.
After eight overs Valley was 34 for two . The next eight overs added 38 runs but Valley lost the wicket of Neil Gilbert for 24. Nick Webster(39) guided Valley to 107 for five and further down the order Geoff Mansfield(21) and McKenzie(35 not out) took Valley to 182 before the tenth wicket fell at 182 in the 44th over. Drew took four for 21 while Phil Crossan claimed three for 36 and Dan Conlan, two for 23.
