Both Finalists Beaten In Final Round of Dick Hunt

Although both Union and Oamaru were beaten in the final round of Dick Hunt trophy cricket on Saturday, both will meet in the final next weekend. Albion beat Oamaru by 140 runs but Albion was still 15 points behind Oamaru at the end of the day. Valley beat Union by 137 runs to draw level on the points table but on a count back Union made the final.

A superb 115 from opening bat Simon Butler guided Albion to 300 for nine in its 45 overs against Oamaru. Butler hit four massive sixes in his innings. Albion lost opener Darren Shillito(13) early in the innings but Butler upped the tempo to take Albion to 80 for one and then 152 for two with the demise of Peter Cartwright for 15.Dylan Winter (35) joined Butler and Albion raced to 182 for three and down the order Brad Kernahan(33) and Daniel Fletcher(21 not out) took Albion to the 300 mark. Off spinner Paul Selbie took three for 44 off his nine overs while David Sewell claimed two for 39.

Needing to score at better than seven runs an over to win, Oamaru after 12 overs was 67 for two, 85 for three after 18 overs and 145 for seven after 30 of the 45 overs. David Sewell top scored with 28 while Ben Coleman added 22 before the final Oamaru wicket fell with the total at 160 in the 33rd over. Daniel Fletcher completed a rewarding day taking four for 19 off six overs while Paul O'Dell and Dylan Winter claimed the other wickets.

North Otago rugby front rower John Blakely was denied a century in the Valley/Union game running out of overs to be unbeaten on 95.Valley won the toss and batting first made 271 in its 45 overs with three wickets in hand. Byron Neil gave Valley a fine start with 77 before his was the fifth wicket to fall at 160 in the 36th over. Neil and Blakely added 40 for the fifth wicket and Blakely continued adding 95 for the sixth wicket with Geoff Smith(59).Bowling for Union Dan Conlan took two for 56 and Nathan Hill two for 45.
