Christchurch v. North Otago
Action shot of a run out during the game against Otago Country
Wednesday, 19 January 1927

Perfect cricket weather prevailed yesterday for the opening of the match between a Christchurch eleven captained by Mr H. E. Lawrence, and the North Otago team at the school ground. The President of the North Otago Association (Mr M. S. Holmes) and Mrs Holmes provided a most acceptable afternoon tea.

One man short, the visitors batted first and complied first and compiled the respectable total of 294 runs, on a perfect wicket, the principal contributors being W. Hayes (55), Woods (97), and L. Hayes (51). The Hayes-Woods partnership provided attractive cricket, and was responsible for 134 runs. Woods' rapid scoring with excellent well-placed drives roused the onlookers. Though Hayes and Haynes were not spectacular they were sound. Haynes was the more forceful of the two. The North Otago fielding was very fair.

Bad luck was encountered by the local team at the opening of their innings, Jacobs being run out before he had received a ball. Uttley and Zimmerman, however were a difficult combination to break up, and the score was 98 for one wicket before a weak stroke by Zimmerman, who batted attractively for his total of 51, brought about his dismissal. All round the wicket play was indulged by Uttley, whose late cuts and leg glances delighted the spectators. McDonald and Uttley played out time, stumps being drawn with the score 109 for two wickets.

Messrs N. Maude and C.J. Marshall acted as umpires.

Resuming this morning on a wicket that still favoured the batsmen, Uttley and McDonald rattled on the scores. The former continued until he had complied the tidy total of 82. McDonald, Sumpter and Milnes played attractively for their scores.
