The North Otago senior representative cricket team outplayed Southland in all aspects in the two-day match at Invercargill on Saturday and Sunday.

Southland batted a 70 run opening partnership to be 111 for three at lunch on the first day. North Otago's C. Taylor and K. Thickett started a Southland collapse immediately afterwards, and Southland was all out for 153.

Taylor took four for 36 off 19 overs and Thickett the same the off 10 overs. Earlier R. Mason and K. McNally bowled economically to contain the top order batsmen.

At stumps on the first day, North Otago was 117 for two. The runs continued on the second day, which was interrupted by rain and poor light on occasions. When was eventually called off shortly after lunch, North Otago had a lead of 91 with Wright on 46, Blakely 63, Smith 30 and Johnson 49.

A feature of the North Otago fielding was two stumping's by McDonald, one particularly outstanding off the leg side.

North Otago batted 45 minutes to afternoon tea without loss. It was 16 overs before Southland took the first wicket, and with the shine taken of the new ball, North Otago's middle order set about the Southland attack.
