Yesterday the visiting the Otago team began a match with North Otago on the school ground under ideal conditions. The wicket and outfield were fast and when Jones won the toss he decided to bat, Uttley and Sumpter opening to Monk and Cavanagh. The former was making the ball fly off the fast pitch, and the batsmen played warily. Uttley early touched one of the fast ones to first slip, when Allen lost the opportunity of dismissing him. Sumpter, after playing several overs confidently, all from Monk, fell a victim to a slower ball, of which he made a yorker. Milner followed and played safe until he got the pace of the wicket. Shortly after Uttley was given out lbw to Monk, after making 19, mostly off Cavanagh, whom he took of advantage of gaps to drive into the country. Zimmerman joined Milner and a fruitful partnership ensured. Monk, who maintained considerable pace, began to shorten his length and was relieved by Claridge, while Moloney gave Cavanagh a spell. Milner, once in his stride, batted confidently and played many good shorts the best of which were several hooks off high rising balls. These he turned well and his shots in front of point were also very well played. His was an excellent innings, and one that laid the foundation for the team's good showing. Zimmerman handicapped by a groggy knee, was satisfied to proceed sedately, but he got his 35 mostly by waiting for the right ball to drive, and then making no error of it. He enjoyed himself at the expense of Moloney. Both Zimmerman and Milner fell victims to Monk , the former with a snitcher, the later with a slower ball. Then Carrington and McDonald joined forces, and both quickly got into their stride. McDonald, more confident then usual in big cricket, faced Monk well and on drove him nicely. From the other end he hit Cavanagh for a beautiful six, but then he had reached 21 and looked like getting a lot more, he hit a hard one back to Cavanagh, who made a fine catch. After the tea adjournment. Carrington who was shaping well, was caught in the slips of Monk. Maddigan and Walton were together, but not for long, for Cavanagh cleaned up the later, who Davey succeeded. Maddigan was shaping very stoutly, but Davey should have been stumped early of Cavanagh. However, he picked up the pace of the wicket later and scored freely to leg of the slow bowler until at 21 he hit up one near the wicket and was caught. Jones and Maddigan carried on and changes in the bowling were numerous. Maddigan was playing some nice shots on the off, and had reached 23 when he played a ball hard to cover and ran. Being unable to regain his ground, he was run out. Jones scored freely off the weak bowling and the score mounted steadily to 276, at which stage Jones was bowled by Cavanagh, leaving Keith not out with 5. Monk was easily the most difficult of the visiting bowlers and he found the going too hard to bowl in long spells. Cavanagh bowled well at the opening but after the shine went off the ball he was not so successful. The visitors fielding was far from good, several catches being dropped, while the ground fielding was not clean. Barron and Gale (formerly of Oamaru) opened for the visitors to Carrington and Keith. The former was bowling short, but Keith kept a good length. After a couple of overs Maddigan took over from Carrington and struck a length at once. Davey relieved Keith and his first ball Barron hit the square leg for six. The others played carefully until Davey caught him with his leg in front to a straight one. Priest joined Gale and played out time.
