North Otago v. Otago Colts
Stephan Grobler attempt to cut to square
Sunday, 26 December 1937

After a bad start the Otago Colts team made a good recovery against North Otago in a two-day match which was commenced at Carisbrook before a good attendance yesterday afternoon. The innings closed for 191, and at the end of the day the home side had placed itself in a good position by dismissing four North Otago men for 29 runs.

Batting on an excellent wicket the Colts lost six wickets for 58 runs, but the careful play of Hogg and clean hitting by Mahoney, the High School player, who scored 28, brought about a decided improvement. When Mahoney was dismissed Sinclair filled the vacancy and attacked the bowling in the most care-free fashion, rattling on 37 in quick time. Hogg's innings yielded an invaluable 35, and Begg added 20 by bright cricket. As a result the Otago side made a useful score in spite of early disasters.

McDonald, the North Otago captain, tried no fewer than nine bowlers, of whom Maddigan, who kept a fine length and made the ball turn back from the off, was easily the best, securing the excellent figures of five for 38. The fielding at the start was keen but it was less impressive towards the end of the innings, dropped catches assisting the Colt's recovery.

When North Otago's innings commenced the batsmen faced dangerous, if not accurate bowling. The bad start which the visitors made was due to the fine performance of Henderson, who took all of the four wickets, which went at a cost of only 16 runs.
