Three centuries were the highlights of the qualifying round of Borton Cup cricket in Oamaru on Saturday in damp, overcast conditions. Duncan Drew marked his return from illness with a gutsy 103 for Union and with Sean Conlan(125 not out) added 202 runs for the third wicket as Union beat St Kevin's College by 175 runs. Sean Eathorne's 127 guided Waitaki Boys High School to a 52 run win over competition leaders, Albion while Valley set up final round game against Waitaki Boys for the fourth place in the semi finals with a four wicket win over Oamaru which dropped back to third place behind Albion and Union.

Union won the toss against St Kevin's and decided to bat first. Antony Cromwell (27) gave the side a solid start but the loss of the second wicket brought Drew and Conlan together for their match winning third wicket partnership. Drew was dismissed but Conlan and Glynn Cameron (44 not out) made light of the St Kevin's attack going through to 346 for three at the end of 50 overs. Jeremy Smith took two for 69 for the College side. St Kevin's made a bright start and after 23 overs was 101 for three with Jordan Bartlett(36) and Richard Turner(25) the best of the batsmen. The side slumped to 113 for five in the 30th over and 155 for seven eight overs later before the final wicket fell at 171 in the 41st over with Jake Day adding a invaluable 28 runs. Chris Ware took three for 32 and Dan Conlan, three for nine.

Albion won the toss at Milner Park and put Waitaki Boys in to bat. The school side started in positive fashion at 69 for two after just nine overs and seven overs later had moved through to 115 for two with Eathorne poised on 70. The next six overs saw Eathorne bring up his century but Waitaki Boys dropped four wickets. Eathorne went on to 127 before he was dismissed and the side was eventually all out for 225 in the 35th over. Marshall Smith took three for 59 and Ricky Whyte, two for 32.

Waitaki Boys dominated the early stages of the Albion innings having the competition leaders 84 for five after 18 overs with Tim Squire taking three for 25 and Matt Day, two for 46. Some solid batting from Paul Odell(28), Daniel Fletcher(35) and Ricky Whyte(36) saw Albion through to 173 before the final wicket fell in the 32nd over. Adrian Myburgh took two for 21 off 2.3 overs.

Valley asked Oamaru to bat first at Weston and struck early having Oamaru, 58 for four after 23 overs, 75 for six after 31 overs and 112 for nine after 41 overs before the tail wagged a little with Gary Clearwater unbeaten on 33 before the final wicket fell at 134 in the 42nd over. Anthony Sewell(28) was the best of the top order while Geoff Mavor finished with five for 24 and Dave Simpson, two for 23.

Valley had a great start with Scott Kingan dismissed on 49 as Valley went through to 83 for four after 21 overs. Simpson chipped in with 25 as Valley reached its target with four wickets in hand. Clearwater took four for 19 for Oamaru.
