Union hit winning form after two losses in previous games to confirm it will finish as top qualifier after the final round of qualifying play next Saturday. Union beat Waitaki Boys by four wickets at the weekend. Albion moved into second place with a 119-run win over Valley to hold second place, 10 points ahead of Oamaru which beat St Kevin's College by four wickets.
Waitaki Boys and Valley are currently tied in fourth place with 45 points.
Union put Waitaki Boys in to bat and despite an unbeaten 101 from Stephan Groblar, Waitaki was dismissed for 146. Brad Fleming, Isaac Shields and Duncan Drew each took three wickets. Union took only 29 over's to make 149 for six, as Jeremiah Shields (58) dominated the bowling. Nathan Smith, Groblar and Don Lolo took two wickets each for Waitaki.
Valley put Albion into bat first and led by solid batting from Steve Halliwell (64), Chris Cunningham (52), Brad Kernahan (20) and Paul Odell (22 not out), Albion made 230 for nine in its 50 over's. Hamish McKenzie took four for 51 for Valley while Geoff Mavor and Tom Squire took two wickets each.
Valley was dismissed for 111 after McKenzie retired hurt. Neil Gilbert had the top score of 35, while Albion bowlers Brad Kernahan took four for 35 and Gareth Duncan two for 19.
St Kevin's decided to bat first against Oamaru and was dismissed for 65 in the 23rd over. Brodie Flannery had the top score of 20.
Bowling for Oamaru, Matt Murphy took seven for 22 and David Sewell took three for 21. Oamaru lost six wickets before it passed the St Kevin's total in the 15th over, Tim McCormick taking four for 23 for St Kevin's.
