Mainly due to a fine spell of bowling by the left-hander, L. Taylor, who took six wickets for 53 runs, South Canterbury won their first home representative cricket match of the season when they beat North Otago by 27 runs at Fraser Park yesterday. For the greater part of the day a strong northwest wind made conditions unpleasant, but entertaining cricket was witnessed by a moderate attendance of the public.
Winning the toss the South Canterbury captain, R. Bigger, elected to bat and after being given an excellent start by the openers, McEwen and Cade who put on 72 runs, the middle of the side slumped and at one stage six wickets were down for 101. Webber and Lang retrieved the situation with the former playing confidently until he was unfortunately run out. The innings closed for 181 runs.
The major portion of the North Otago attack was carried by McLaren and Berry who both bowled unchanged for a long spell without success. Off 18 overs McLaren took five South Canterbury wickets for a moderate cost of 44 runs. Berry took three for 38 of 16 overs. Clean ground fielding and accurate returns to the wicket were the main features of the North Otago team's work in the outfield.
Success came early to the South Canterbury team when Taylor bowled Parker before he had opened his account and when Harley, bowling from the other end had taken Madigan's wicket the visitors were in a bad position. Two quick wickets fell before McLaren came to the wicket and then he and the captain, Kinder, stopped the rot. Between them they added 69 runs of which total McLaren scored 64. His strokes were cleanly made and when he played himself in, he opened out to the slow bowlers and hit three sixes, one of them a glorious drive off Gould.
