North Otago v. Otago
North Otago's U17 Openers
Saturday, 1 March 1930

Again the conditions were perfect when the match North Otago v. Otago was resumed yesterday morning though in the late afternoon a cold wind of the sea made onlookers uncomfortable. Gale and Priest carried on Otago's innings, and proceeded to score freely. Gale batted very soundly, and his driving was powerful, anything over tossed being severely dealt with Changes in the bowling had little effect until Zimmerman had Priest caught by Davey in the slips. Priest was very orthodox, but after his first few overs, never looked to be in trouble. Gale gave a chance to Milner in the slips fairly early in his innings, later on to Sumpter at cover and , just before the close, one to Maddigan at mid-off. All the chances were hard hit, but all should have been held. At last he mis-hit Walton over the bowler's head, and Sumpter running across made a safe catch. Then Walton had a run of success, for Strang was hopelessly at sea to him and Cavanagh failed to connect with all his swings at the slow bowler. He gave a chance to Uttley at deep mid-on, a very hard one, then bought an unsound innings to close by being caught behind the wickets. Allan stepped across to an off-break from Walton, but got so far across that he left his leg bail exposed, and this the ball removed. Moloney was playing very correctly, until he moved out to ball on the leg from Keith, and was stumped. Brown never looked happy and spooned Walton to Carrington at mid-on. Monk, Claridge and Hawksworth all hit hard and straight. Claridge getting 18 in four hits, including a straight six. Monk and Hawksworth both showed form and stole many short ones. The innings closed for 355. Walton finished with the good average of 5 for 61, and Keith, Davey, McDonald, and Zimmerman each got a wicket. McDonald suffered most from bat catching, and he was easily the most dangerous of the fast bowlers. Keith kept a good length, but was not doing anything on the wicket. The local ground fielding was smart and generally clean all the players maintaining their keenness throughout and the throwing in was on the on the whole good. Outstanding in this respect were McDonald, Sumpter, Carrington and Milner. North Otago batted a second time, but there was not the same amount of keenness in this hand. Most of the batsmen hit out, got runs, and got out. When time was called the total was 9 for 195.
