Southland beat North Otago in a representative cricket match at the weekend but only after North Otago had fought back from 23 for three overnight to 226, just five runs behind the Southland first innings total.

At stumps Southland had scored 59 for the loss of one wicket in its second innings.

Top scorer for North Otago was B.R. Papps who hit up 84 runs while A. Berry also helped the North Otago total with 52.

The Southland bowling was first-class; but the fielding had several blemish's and some easy catches went to ground.

A last wicket partnership of 55 by R. Roy and G. Thompson was the highlight of the Southland innings. Thompson, who came to the wicket when the score was 176 for nine, hit up 39 in quick time.

Earlier, most of the batsmen had difficulty on a wicket which gave help to the seam bowlers and only opening batsmen W. Lindsay, who stoked confidently to make 42, appeared to be on top of the bowling.

A. Cartwright gave a marathon bowling performance for North Otago, taking eight wickets for 81 runs and troubling all batsmen with his medium pacers.
