Union marched to the top of the Borton Cup ladder with a 98 run win over Valley King George Park on Saturday. St Kevin’s College registered its first win of the season with a four wicket win over Albion while in a runfest at Milner Park Waitaki Boys High School scored its first win beating Oamaru by 27 runs in a game which saw 529 runs scored in the afternoon.
In second grade cricket Oamaru’s Reece Curle had a field day playing for Oamaru against Albion. Curle was unbeaten on 130 in gthe Oamaru innings and then with the ball took three Albion wickers for five runs off just three overs.
Although Union lost opener Antony Cromwell (20) early in the innings a Jeremiah Shields(44) and Sean Conlan(44) produced a third wicket stand of 100 to set Union on the way to 212 for eight in its 50 overs. Nathan McLaughlin was the pick of the Valley bowlers taking five for 29 off seven overs while Blair Malcolm claimed three for 26. Valley slumped to 52 for five after 18 overs and although McLaughlin(33) and Mark Broughton(32) put up some resistance the side succumbed to be all out for 114. Phil Crossan too three for 32 and Glynn Cameron,two for 17, opening the bowling, it was allrounder Duncan Drew who grabbed the honours with four for nine of 4.5 overs.
St Kevin’s won the toss and put Albion in to bat at St Kevin’s and had immediate success with Albion drifting to 65 for seven after 22 overs. Nigel Moriarty(29) showed some pluck in his innings but the side was dismissed for 101 in the 33rd over. Sean Kelliher took four for 33 and Jeremy Smith, two for 18.
St Kevin’s cruised to a four wicket win in 25 overs with Tim O’Malley topscoring with 39 while Brad Kernahan took three for 29 and Ricky Whyte two for 24.
There were runs aplenty at Milner Park after Waitaki Boys won the toss and elected to bat first. Led by South African player/coach Stephan Grobler, Waitaki Boys made 278 for six in its 50 overs with Grobler unbeaten on 150 while Jordan Upton added an unbeaten 32. Matt Murphy and James Blackhouse took two wickets each for Oamaru.
After Oamaru’s first round innings of 28 all out, Waitaki looked for an early finish but allrounder Gary Mahuika’s innings of 97 gave Oamaru more than a sniff of victory but apart from Andrew Ashton(31) and Josh Gutsell(22) the support was not forthcoming and Oamaru at the end of its 50 overs was 251 for nine. Sam Wicks took three for 49 and Groblar, two for 44.
