Albion retained the Borton Cup symbol of senior cricket supremacy when it defeated Union in the final at Milner Park on Saturday by 45 runs. Albion won the toss and decided to bat first on a pitch which produced variable bounce.

Albion’s Ammir Mirza(34) gave Albion a solid start after big hitting Ian Cooney had been dismissed for six with the total at 22.Jeremy Smith (46) provided much needed impetus at four lifting the run rate with Peter Cartwright(25) but it was Nigel Moriarty(49 not out) batting at nine that gave the Albion innings real substance taking Albion through to 233 after the fifty overs. Dan Conlan was the most successful Union bowler taking three for 40 although Paul Johnston’s arid bowling conceding only 25 runs off his ten overs slowed the Albion momentum.

Union lost openers Duncan Drew and Jake Greenslade with only twelve runs on the board. Jeremiah Shields(20) added some solidity but Union at 95 for seven was tottering. Brad Fleming(44 not out) and Matt Lilley(41) 71 runs for the ninth wicket had different ideas as the pair added 71 runs for the ninth wicket before Union was dismissed for 188. Left armer Paul Odell took three for 31 while Jeremy Smith and Ricky Whyte took two wickets each.
