Omar's Khalil and Valley's Robbie Smith dominated the seventh round of Dick Hunt trophy cricket with fine individual performances with both bat and ball to qualify for the Dick Hunt Final on Saturday week. Khalil guided Oamaru to a 46 run win over Union while Smith saw Valley through to a two wicket win over Albion.
Union won the toss and put Oamaru in to bat at King George Park and after 11 overs had Oamaru 46 for three. Nineteen overs later Oamaru was struggling to double its score but Khalil who had come in with the fall of the third wicket batted solidly to be unbeaten on 49 at the end of the 45 overs with Oamaru, 169 for eight with Khalil the only Oamaru batsman to score more than 20 runs. Bowling for Union Phil Crossan took three for 27 and Nathan Hill, three for 24.
Union started its chase in positive fashion to be 20 without loss after four overs. The demise of Stu Dickinson(24) and Thomas Shields(23) saw Union slump from 84 for four in the 18th over to be all out for 113 in the 34th over. Khalil took four for 19 and Nick Johnston three for 32.
In a game that was reduced to a 43 over match because of rain Albion won the toss and batted first against Valley at Weston. Albion's top order failed to fire and after 20 overs Albion was 64 for five. It was only positive batting from Jon Sinclair(42) and Sean Robertson(28) that carried Albion through to a respectable 194 before the tenth wicket fell in the 35th over. Robbie Smith took four for 40, Geoff Mavor, three for 40 and Hamish McKenzie, two for 44 for Valley.
Byron Neil(24) gave Valley a good start receiving solid backing from Neil Gilbert( 29) which saw Valley at 117 for four after 23 overs. A fine innings of 68 from Smith saw Valley pass the Albion target in the 37th over. Dylan Winter, Sean Robertson, Daniel Fletcher and Gareth Duncan took two wickets each for Albion.
