Union took the Borton Cup the symbol of supremacy in North Otago senior club cricket with an 84 run win over last seasons champions, Oamaru at Whitestone Contracting stadium on Saturday in perfect conditions.
Oamaru won the toss and asked Union to bat and although David Sewell struck the pads on numerous occasions in his first spell success was hard to come by as Union batted stolidly to be 58 for three after 15 of the 45 overs losing openers Antony Cromwell(21) and Duncan Drew(15) early in the innings. Jeremiah Shield joined Glynn Cameron at the crease and took Union through to 78 for three after 20 overs. Shields was run out for 17 as Union slumped to 94 for four with 20 overs remaining.
Cameron was joined by veteran Mark Wilson and this pair added 79 runs for the fifth wicket before Wilson was dismissed for 40. Cameron was eventually run out for 47 as Union made 198 for the loss of eight wickets at the end of the 45 overs.
Sewell was the best of the Oamaru bowler taking three for 22 off ten overs.
Oamaru lost Robbie Hill(3) and Jamie Ferris(10) to be 24 for two after six overs. Oamaru struggled to build batting momentum as wickets fell regularly to 80 for five after 29 overs. Only David Sewell(32) and Ben Coleman(21) showed any resistance as the last five wickets fell for 34 runs to leave Oamaru stranded at 114 all out in the 39th over.
Cameron completed a fine double taking four for 22 off ten overs, at one stage sitting on a hat trick, while Paul Johnston and Phil Crossan chimed in with three for 31 and two for 11 respectively.
In lower grades Albion beat the previously unbeaten Union to stop a Union Senior/Senior Reserve double while Valley won the second grade final against Albion Blue.
