On a wicket that was far from easy batsmen on both sides found runs difficult to obtain when North Otago played South Canterbury during the week-end.
South Canterbury, batting first, made 126. At one stage it was five wickets down for 67, the total did not promise to reach that figure, but McKinney's 27 at the end of the list made it look respectable. Kerr proved a valuable sheet anchor for North Otago and played the best cricket of the match, being undefeated at 24. Murray reached 40 by using the long handle: orthodox play paid small dividends on a slow pitch and dead outfield.
North Otago at 6 for 85 declared the innings closed to secure if possible a two innings win and it looked as though this bid would be successful, for the early South Canterbury batsmen fell so quickly that five of them were out with only eight runs on the board, and seven were back on the bank at 9, but Ward and Dellow took the score to 78 and the game petered out as rain stopped play early.
A feature of the game was the skilful bowling of Sandri for North Otago, who claimed seven victims at a cost of seven runs a piece.
